i am trying to installer the oracle installer that came with the book 'oracle8i starterkit for linux
installer just hangs here is output
any idea why it will not start on this suse 7.2 box?

I got that problem too. But that's not the only problem.
Your problem can be simply solved by running
bash> unset LANG
Run setup again and you'll get another error somewhere in dbassist process. Now you have to download patch from oracle technet which is glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz and relink some binary files ( see Readme for instruction ). After that everything should be fine except netassist, but it's ok since you can use Netca instead or even do it manually.

yes unset lang did it for me [[ another person had suggested the same b4 reading this :-) thanks
my problem know is that it appears all i have is an idle instance, not sure hot to create one either
